The default download location on our Windows systems works well enough most of the time without a problem, but what if you want or need to change the location at the system level? With that in mind, today’s SuperUser Q&A post has some helpful advice for a frustrated reader.

You’ll be taken to the map with a “Default Location” box visible. Click the “Set Default Location” button. To set a default location, you can either type a street address into the box or click “Set Location” and select a specific position on the map.

I would like to keep my drive paths as clean as possible and C:Downloads is much nicer than C:UsersMynameDownloads. How can I stop Windows 10 from using the user name profile location by default?

Restore Default Path Windows 10
1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Create the folder you want to have as your new Downloads folder (i.e. C:Downloads)
3. Under This PC, right-click Downloads
4. Click Properties
5. Select the Location Tab
6. Click Move
7. Select the folder you made in Step 2
8. Once it has finished copying everything to the new folder, click OK to close the Properties Window

It is not Windows itself that downloads files, but rather its applications like web browsers or other network clients. If you are specifically talking about downloading files from the Internet, your web browser has a setting for the default download location. You can even set it to ask you each time where you want to put a file that you are about to download.

Many users enjoy the updated features of Microsoft Edge, but one feature sorely missed from the original Internet Explorer is the ability to change the download location directly from the browser.
Fortunately, there's a way to set a new download location within Windows 10's settings. You can redirect your downloads from the Downloads folder on your computer's C: drive, or to a new downloads folder in a different drive. Read on to learn how to set a new download location.

It's best to change the default download location when you've just set up a new Windows 10 computer, recently reset your computer, or have only a few files in your original Downloads folder. It may take some time for the files to move from the old path to the new path.
- Create a new folder for your downloads. Create this folder in a location in a disk that's not the C: drive.Alternatively, if you already have a folder you want to use for your downloads, make sure it's in a location other than the C: drive.
- Right-click on Downloads in the left pane of the File Explorer window and choose Properties. - Select the Location tab of the Downloads Properties window.
- Select the Move button to open the Select a Destination window. Navigate to the new folder where you want to store downloads.
- You'll then get a prompt asking if you want the files from your original Downloads folder to go into the new Downloads folder. If you do, select Yes to confirm.It's safer to set new download locations on non-removable storage, such as an internal hard drive or SSD. External storage can be volatile and corrupt files if not properly connected to a computer.
- The new downloads path is now set. Now, when you download from Microsoft Edge, all data will go to the new download location.
If you reinstall Windows 10, a custom Downloads folder on a different drive won't disappear with all your data if you accidentally format your system partition.
